Now Women Can Work Night Shifts in Delhi: Government Grants Permission with Certain Conditions

New Delhi: The Delhi government, in a notification issued on Thursday, has granted permission for women employees to work night shifts in shops and commercial establishments — but only with their mandatory written consent.

The notification further stated that, under the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, every employee is entitled to double wages for overtime work and a maximum of 48 working hours per week. Additionally, Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) must be constituted in all such establishments to ensure workplace safety and grievance redressal.

The proposal to allow women employees to work night shifts had been approved earlier this year by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena.

In the latest notification issued by the Delhi Labour Department, two new provisions have been added under the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954, concerning the employment of women and the terms of their service. It specifies that women will be permitted to work during night hours only if they provide written consent for the same.

This move aims to promote gender inclusivity in Delhi’s workforce while ensuring the safety, rights, and fair compensation of women employees.
