From Birds to Cats: The Expanding Reach of H5N1 Bird Flu

Bird Flu in Cats: Precautions and RisksRecent findings from Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, confirm bird flu (H5N1) in domestic cats, and health authorities are taking precautions. Although the risk of infection in humans is low, it is important to remain informed and take precautions.

The detection of H5N1 in Chhindwara has raised concerns, especially after three cats succumbed to the virus. Symptoms included high fever, loss of appetite, and lethargy, leading to death within one to three days. Scientists identified the virus as lineage 2.3.2.1a, previously responsible for poultry outbreaks in India.Similar cases have emerged in Washington, USA, where two pet cats contracted the virus after consuming raw meat. One cat was euthanized and the other one is being treated because of their critical illness. Transmission is caused by migratory birds, while signs in cats involve weakness, pneumonia, and respiratory infections. Though no case in humans has been reported yet, contact with infected animals or raw meat may lead to exposure. Experts also discourage feeding raw meat or unpasteurized milk to pets.

Can Bird Flu Spread to Humans?

Virologist Jacob John cautions that since 1996, H5N1 has been mutating and is currently infecting mammals. Although transmission from humans to humans hasn’t happened, ongoing mutations make it a cause for concern. WHO states that avian flu mainly attacks birds, with occasional human infection due to direct contact.

Preventive Measures

stay away from direct contact with birds and animals.Practice hygiene through frequent hand-washing.Cook and heat poultry and eggs thoroughly.Wear gloves and masks while handling animals.Consult a doctor in case of symptoms.Strengthen immunity through good living.
