National Desk: Air pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached alarming levels, making even breathing a challenge. Mornings now begin not with sunshine, but with checking the AQI on mobile screens. With complaints of eye irritation, breathing problems, and rising illnesses, the Delhi government has enforced strict measures to control pollution. If you are planning to travel to Delhi from Noida, Ghaziabad, or Gurugram, it is crucial to be aware of the latest restrictions before stepping out.
Only BS-VI Vehicles Allowed Entry into Delhi
From today, only BS-VI compliant vehicles are permitted to enter Delhi. Vehicles from other states that do not meet BS-VI emission standards are barred from entering the capital. However, vehicles registered in Delhi that are below BS-VI norms have not been restricted for now. Traffic police and transport department officials are maintaining strict surveillance at border points.
No Fuel Without Valid PUC
The government has tightened checks at fuel stations as well. Vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate will not be provided petrol, diesel, or CNG. Special enforcement teams have been deployed at petrol pumps to ensure strict compliance.
Complete Ban on Construction Trucks
Trucks carrying sand, badarpur, and other construction materials have been completely banned from entering Delhi. Vehicles violating the order will be seized and fined. The government believes dust from construction activities is a major contributor to air pollution.
50% Work From Home Made Mandatory
Following the implementation of GRAP-4, the Delhi government has issued a major directive for both government and private offices. Except for essential services, 50% of employees must work from home. Strict action and penalties will be imposed for non-compliance.
Financial Relief for Construction Workers
To support workers affected by the suspension of construction activities, the Delhi government has announced financial assistance of ₹10,000 for registered construction workers, which will be directly transferred to their bank accounts. Assistance may continue even after GRAP-4 is lifted, depending on conditions.
Tight Security at Border Points
Strict monitoring is being enforced at major border points such as Kondli, Tikri, Kalindi Kunj, Kapashera, Rajokri, and Aya Nagar. More than 7,800 enforcement teams from the transport department have been deployed at toll booths and entry points.
Government Appeals for Carpooling and Green Cover
The Delhi government has urged citizens to reduce the use of private vehicles and adopt carpooling. Work is also underway on a dedicated app to support this initiative. Additionally, emphasis is being placed on increasing greenery to curb dust pollution, as dust accumulation reduces the oxygen-producing capacity of trees.
Supreme Court’s Strict Observations
During hearings on pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court adopted a tough stance, stating that the steps taken so far have failed to deliver results. The court stressed the need for long-term planning, strict enforcement of rules, removal of toll plazas, and exploring alternative employment options for construction workers.
AQI Raises Serious Concern
Over the past few days, Delhi’s AQI has remained in the “very poor” to “severe” category. On December 15, AQI touched 500, an extremely dangerous level. Experts warn that if conditions persist, the health impact could become more severe. Therefore, before traveling to Delhi, ensure your vehicle is BS-VI compliant, your PUC certificate is valid, and all government guidelines are being followed, as even minor negligence can lead to fines and inconvenience.
