New Delhi: The scorching summer in Delhi shows no signs of relief as the capital braces for an intense heatwave. According to the weather department, the mercury is expected to soar beyond 44 degrees Celsius starting today. Meanwhile, air quality in the city remains in the ‘poor’ category, raising further concerns.
On Monday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 27.6°C, with the maximum likely to hover around 44°C. The sky will remain clear, and the sun will be blazing throughout the day. Winds are expected to blow at speeds of 20 to 30 km/h. As of 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was measured at 224, which falls under the “poor” category. Neighboring NCR regions are also experiencing air quality ranging from moderate to poor levels. Forecasts suggest that this condition will persist in the coming days.
Heat Forces Residents Indoors in Gurugram
In Gurugram, the intense sunlight has made life extremely difficult. From the early hours of the morning, the sun begins to beat down harshly. On Sunday, temperatures touched 32°C by 8 a.m., and by the afternoon, it had soared to 42°C. The heat forced most people indoors, leaving roads virtually deserted during peak afternoon hours.
Earlier, from the last week of May to June 4, thunderstorms and rain had brought temporary relief from the heat. However, the sun is now back in full force, leaving people scrambling for ways to stay cool. Many were seen using hand fans and covering their heads with towels or umbrellas when venturing outside.
No Rain Expected This Week
On Saturday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C and a minimum of 29°C. By Sunday, the mercury had climbed to 42.0°C during the day and 30.0°C at night. Winds blowing at around 8 km/h offered only minimal comfort. People were seen resorting to cold beverages like sugarcane juice, lemon water, jaljeera, and soft drinks to quench their thirst and beat the heat.
According to the IMD (India Meteorological Department), temperatures are expected to rise by at least one more degree over the next few days. Both Monday and Tuesday are likely to see maximum temperatures exceeding 43°C. There is no rain forecast from Monday to Saturday.
Tips to Stay Safe During the Heatwave:
