Dussehra Liquor Sales Smash Records in Telangana, Nearly ₹700 Crore Sold in Three Days

National Desk: While effigies of Ravana burned in celebrations across the country, Telangana witnessed a different kind of frenzy—crowds flocking to liquor stores. During the three-day Dussehra festivities, over ₹700 crore worth of alcohol was sold across the state, surpassing last year’s entire Dussehra season.

‘Dry Day’ on Gandhi Jayanti Doesn’t Stop Buyers
Despite Gandhi Jayanti (October 8) being a ‘dry day,’ alcohol enthusiasts didn’t hold back. Liquor shop owners began heavy stock lifting well before October 8 to meet the festive demand.

Sales Figures:

  • September 30: Record ₹333 crore
  • Previous two days: ₹367 crore
  • Total for three days: ₹697.23 crore

Growth Compared to Last Year
In 2024, the eight-day Dussehra season recorded total liquor sales of ₹852.38 crore. This year, Telangana achieved 82% of that figure in just three days. Excise department officials attribute the surge to festive parties, family gatherings, and late-night socializing.

Contribution to the State Economy
Revenue from alcohol in Telangana has grown from ₹10,000 crore in 2014 to an estimated ₹34,600 crore for 2024-25. Festivals like Dussehra play a key role in boosting this ‘liquid gold.’

Health Advisory
Health experts caution that while enjoying the festival, moderation is essential, as overindulgence can turn morning headaches into a dampener on the festive cheer.
