National Desk: A new initiative has been launched in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) schools to improve children’s eye health. Under a pilot project introduced by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, teachers will now conduct preliminary eye screenings for students within school premises.
The objective of the programme is to identify children facing vision problems at an early stage so they can receive timely medical care or corrective glasses.
Pilot Launched in 20 Primary Schools
The project has initially been rolled out in 20 primary schools. Experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are providing specialised training to teachers. During the training sessions, teachers are being taught how to conduct basic vision tests using simple tools such as the “E chart” and cardboard charts displaying letters of varying sizes.
How the Process Will Work
After completing the training, teachers will carry out vision screening of students in their respective schools. Children showing signs of vision-related issues will be listed and referred to AIIMS doctors for detailed examination. If required, students will be provided free spectacles or further medical treatment.
Future Expansion Plans
If the pilot project proves successful, the initiative will be expanded to all MCD schools across Delhi. The target is to complete screenings in the participating schools by March 31 and provide spectacles to students who need them.
The initiative is considered significant as poor eyesight can negatively impact both academic performance and students’ confidence. Early detection is expected to help improve learning outcomes and overall well-being among children.
