Mr. Yohei Sasakawa to Strengthen Efforts for Leprosy Elimination During India Visit

New Delhi, India – Mr Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, and Patron of the Sasakawa-India Leprosy Foundation, visited India this week, to advance the mission of eliminating leprosy and reducing its social stigma.

During his visit, Mr Sasakawa met with the Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, at his residence to discuss key initiatives and collaborations addressing the socio-economic upliftment of individuals and families affected by leprosy. Mr Sasakawa was accompanied by notable dignitaries, including Member of Parliament Mr Baijayant Panda, Advisory Board member of Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation (S-ILF) Ms Kiran Pasricha and the Chief Executive Officer of S-ILF Mr Gaurab Sen. Dr Takahiro Nanri from Sasakawa Health Foundation was present in the meeting. This engagement will focus on bolstering India’s efforts towards complete leprosy elimination and exploring strategies for enhanced partnerships.

Mr Baijayant Panda, a member of parliament and a member of S-ILF’s Advisory Board, expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of this meeting. “Shri Nadda’s unwavering commitment to public health and leprosy elimination has been instrumental in India’s progress. We are confident that this collaboration will further strengthen our collective resolve to eradicate leprosy and uplift those impacted by it.
