Nationwide Gig Workers’ Strike Tomorrow: Online Deliveries to Home Services to Shut, Major Protest at Jantar Mantar

National Desk: Millions of gig and platform workers linked to India’s digital service economy have decided to take their fight to the streets. Under the leadership of the Gig & Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU), a nationwide strike and road protests will be held on February 3, 2026.

Workers allege that those engaged with online delivery, ride-hailing, and home-service platforms face unstable incomes, lack of social security, and little respect. They claim companies frequently block or deactivate worker IDs without explanation, instantly depriving them of their livelihoods.

Services Likely to Be Affected

According to the union, the strike will include food and grocery delivery partners, cab and bike taxi drivers, beauticians, salon and spa workers, domestic workers, cleaning staff, plumbers, electricians, AC technicians, carpenters, and other platform-based professionals. Earlier, workers had observed an “app switch-off” strike on January 26, 2026, but after no concrete outcome, they have now opted for physical protests.

Jantar Mantar to Be the Focal Point in Delhi

In the national capital, the main protest will be held at Jantar Mantar from 1 pm, where hundreds of gig workers are expected to gather and raise their demands. Simultaneous demonstrations will also take place in several major cities across the country.

Serious Allegations by GIPSWU

The union has levelled multiple allegations against platform companies, including arbitrary suspension or deactivation of worker IDs, lack of transparency in rating and job-allocation systems, extremely low and unstable earnings, unilateral changes to rules, and alleged harassment of women workers—sometimes followed by ID blocking after complaints are filed.

What Are Gig Workers Demanding?

GIPSWU National President Seema Singh said repeated attempts to engage in dialogue with the government have been ignored. The union’s key demands include a separate central law for gig and platform workers, a complete ban on arbitrary ID blocking, transparent rating and payment systems, an effective grievance redressal mechanism with internal complaints committees, workplace safety measures, medical emergency support, and special provisions for women workers.

Pressure Mounts on Government and Companies

The strike is being framed as more than a one-day protest—it is a warning against growing insecurity and exploitation in the gig economy. The apps that millions of users depend on daily run on the labour of these workers, who are now prepared to hit the streets for their rights. The coming days will show how seriously the government and platform companies respond to this movement.
