National Desk: The winter chill has begun to make its presence felt across several parts of India. Following recent rain and snowfall in the hilly regions, temperatures have started to drop in Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other northern plains. Mornings and evenings are now noticeably cooler, and many residents in Delhi-NCR have stopped using fans and coolers, instead opting for light blankets at night.
At the same time, heavy rainfall continues in several regions, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh rain alerts for southern and northeastern states.
Regions Under IMD Rainfall Alert
Region | States/Areas | Alert Period |
---|---|---|
South India | Tamil Nadu, Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, and Mahe | October 9–12 |
East India | Odisha | October 9–11 |
Northeast India | Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura | October 9–10 |
Northeast India | Arunachal Pradesh | October 10 |
In addition, strong winds are expected in parts of Telangana during this period.
Snowfall in the Hills Brings Down Temperatures
Fresh snowfall in Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh has led to a sharp dip in temperatures, ushering in an early cold wave in many high-altitude areas. Due to heavy snow, the Manali–Leh highway has been blocked, and vehicles heading toward Leh have been stopped at Darcha.
In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall measurements include:
- Gondhla (Lahaul-Spiti): 30 cm
- Keylong: 15 cm
- Kukumseri: 3.2 cm
As a result, minimum temperatures in these regions have dropped by 5–6°C below normal, while maximum temperatures have fallen by 7–14°C due to moderate to heavy rainfall in the lower and middle hills.
Weather Update for Rajasthan
According to the IMD, weather in Rajasthan will remain dry starting today. Sunshine is expected throughout the day, and no rainfall is forecast for the next week. The winter chill is likely to intensify in the last week of October or early November across the state.
