Dr. Dinesh Kapoor, National President of the All India Federation of Gym Centres and Fitness Equipment Traders, has welcomed the recent reduction in GST rates. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the landmark decision of lowering GST on gym memberships from 12% to 5%, calling it a highly commendable step for both the fitness industry and the health of the nation.
The Federation has now appealed to the Prime Minister to reduce GST on Physical Exercise Equipment from the current 18% to 5%. Dr. Kapoor emphasized that the higher tax rate is preventing the middle-class population from accessing essential fitness equipment.
He also clarified that fitness equipment is not limited to treadmills. It includes dumbbells, weight plates, lifting platforms, strength training machines, and several other vital tools. Without these, neither athletes nor fitness enthusiasts can effectively build strength and enhance performance.
According to Dr. Kapoor, lowering taxes will encourage more people to adopt fitness as a lifestyle, thereby giving fresh momentum to the Fit India Movement. He added that such a reform would be another significant step toward building a healthier India.
