UP News: There is good news for consumers using smart prepaid electricity meters in Uttar Pradesh. A new rule is being introduced under which consumers will receive compensation if their electricity supply is not restored within two hours after recharging their smart meter.
According to the new arrangement linked to the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), if a consumer recharges their smart prepaid meter but the power supply is not restored within the specified time, they will be entitled to a compensation of ₹50.
This rule will apply specifically to cases where the electricity supply was disconnected due to the smart meter balance running out and power is not resumed even after the consumer completes the recharge.
The new system is expected to come into effect from March 13, and once implemented, it is likely to benefit millions of electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh.
Around 70 Lakh Consumers to Benefit
The smart prepaid meter system is being implemented rapidly across Uttar Pradesh, and its impact is already being seen on a large scale. According to available data, nearly 70 lakh smart prepaid electricity consumers in the state will fall under this new rule.
Reports also suggest that many consumers currently have negative balances recorded in their smart meter accounts, making the issue even more significant. Complaints related to smart meters have been frequently raised in the state over the past few months.
Many consumers have reported problems such as difficulties in recharging, sudden balance deductions, and delays in restoring electricity supply after recharge. In this context, the compensation provision is being seen as an important step toward protecting consumer interests and improving service accountability.
Power May Automatically Disconnect When Balance Ends
The electricity department is also preparing to enforce the smart meter system more strictly in the state. According to officials, after March 13, if the balance in a consumer’s smart prepaid meter runs out, the electricity supply may automatically be disconnected.
This process will be managed through an automated digital system, meaning electricity department staff will no longer need to visit the location to physically disconnect the power supply.
Officials believe that the new smart prepaid meter system will help resolve many long-standing issues related to electricity billing in the state.
Aim to Reduce Billing Disputes
The power department argues that the system will reduce common problems such as incorrect billing, average billing complaints, and disputes over pending payments. With prepaid smart meters, consumers will be able to monitor their electricity usage and balance more transparently.
Authorities say this system will improve efficiency and reduce administrative challenges in electricity distribution.
Relief Over Excess Charges as Well
Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) had also provided relief to smart meter consumers by issuing an important directive. The commission ordered that extra charges collected from consumers in the name of smart prepaid meters must be refunded.
According to the order, any additional amount charged from consumers after April 1, 2025, will be adjusted and returned through their electricity bills.
Reports indicate that the total amount of excess charges collected could be around ₹127 crore. If refunded as directed, consumers across the state may receive significant financial relief.
With both the compensation rule and the refund of excess charges, electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh are expected to receive double relief under the evolving smart meter system.
