Mumbai: India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape is entering an exciting new chapter. Global EV giant Tesla has officially commenced its operations in the country, launching its highly popular Model Y electric SUV. Priced at around ₹60 lakh, this marks Tesla’s formal entry into the Indian automotive sector, which is witnessing a growing shift toward sustainable mobility.
At the same time, VinFast, a rapidly emerging Vietnamese electric carmaker, has announced plans to enter the Indian market soon, eyeing the upcoming festive season with the launch of two models — the VF 6 and VF 7. Both brands are poised to intensify competition in the premium and mid-size EV segments, bringing more choices and benefits to Indian consumers.
Tesla Model Y Launched in India
Tesla’s Model Y, known globally for its performance, range, and cutting-edge features, has made its debut in the Indian market with a starting price of approximately ₹60 lakh. The model offers:
- A long driving range (up to 533 km on a single charge, WLTP),
- Dual motor all-wheel drive,
- Tesla’s renowned Autopilot system, and
- A minimalist cabin with a panoramic glass roof and 15-inch touchscreen.
Alongside the launch, Tesla has inaugurated its first Experience Centre in Mumbai, giving potential buyers an opportunity to explore the brand’s technology and design ethos. Visitors can interact with Tesla advisors, view car demos, and experience the feel of a Tesla vehicle before making a purchase decision.
The opening of this Experience Centre signals Tesla’s serious intent to grow in India, where it has been in talks with the government about setting up manufacturing and charging infrastructure.
VinFast to Launch VF 6 and VF 7 During Festive Season
While Tesla takes its first steps in India, VinFast is preparing to make its presence felt soon. The Vietnamese automaker has officially announced that it will launch two electric SUVs — VF 6 and VF 7 — during the Indian festive season, which typically begins in October.
The VF 6 is expected to be a compact urban electric SUV, suitable for city driving, with an estimated range of around 400–450 km. The VF 7, on the other hand, will be a larger SUV offering more space, enhanced features, and a higher driving range. Both vehicles are likely to come with connected features, AI-based infotainment, and advanced safety systems.
VinFast is reportedly working on local partnerships to support battery assembly and manufacturing, allowing them to remain cost-competitive. Expected pricing for these models is likely to range between ₹30 to ₹45 lakh, positioning them well in the premium mid-size segment.
What It Means for Indian Consumers
With both Tesla and VinFast entering the Indian EV space, consumers stand to gain from increased competition. More choices, better features, improved service networks, and a push for charging infrastructure development are expected as these global players establish their foothold.
Tesla’s global brand appeal combined with VinFast’s aggressive expansion strategy may transform India’s EV sector in the coming years — bringing the country closer to its goal of electric mobility and cleaner transportation.
