Uttar Pradesh to Get Its Longest Expressway: Will Pass Through 22 Districts, Connecting East to West

Uttar Pradesh News: The state government of Uttar Pradesh is set to begin work on another mega infrastructure project that could transform the development map of the region. A nearly 700 km long greenfield expressway will be constructed from Gorakhpur to Shamli, making it the longest expressway in the state so far. The project is estimated to cost around ₹35,000 crore.

Superfast Connectivity from East to West

This ambitious expressway will establish a direct and faster link between eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. At present, the Gorakhpur–Shamli journey takes more than 12 hours, but once the expressway is built, the same trip will take only 6 hours. Moreover, the travel distance will reduce by approximately 200 km.

To Pass Through 22 Districts and 37 Tehsils

The Gorakhpur–Shamli Expressway will pass through 22 districts and 37 tehsils of Uttar Pradesh. Major districts along the route include Ayodhya, Sant Kabir Nagar, Barabanki, Gonda, Basti, Bahraich, Lucknow, Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Rampur, Moradabad, Sambhal, Badaun, Bareilly, Amroha, Bijnor, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur.

Part of Punjab–North East Corridor

This project will not be limited to Uttar Pradesh alone. It will also be a part of the Punjab–North East Economic Corridor, thereby contributing to connectivity and growth at the national level. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently preparing a detailed project report, and construction will be carried out in a phased manner. The expressway is expected to boost economic activity, trade, and employment opportunities across the state.

Major Benefits

  • Travel time between eastern and western Uttar Pradesh will be cut by half.
  • Improved road connectivity will accelerate trade, industry, and tourism.
  • Thousands of jobs will be created during construction and related activities.
  • The expressway will play a major role in speeding up development across Purvanchal and western UP.

Once completed, this mega project will not only make travel easier but also bring a significant economic transformation to Uttar Pradesh.
