Experts explain that the thick layer of pollution prevents UVB rays from reaching the ground. These rays are essential for the human body to naturally produce Vitamin D.
Because of this, people across Delhi–NCR are experiencing a rapid increase in deficiency during this season.

Winter Makes the Problem Even Worse

Between November and January, sunlight is already weaker. On top of that, dense smog further reduces the strength of sunlight.
As a result, people are unable to receive the natural Vitamin D they normally get from sun exposure.

How Much Vitamin D Should You Take?

Doctors say that during the pollution-heavy winter months, people should add Vitamin D supplements to their routine. Recommended doses:

  • Adults: 2000 IU daily
  • Teenagers: 1000 IU
  • Children: 600–1000 IU

How Common Is Vitamin D Deficiency in India?

According to a report by ICRIER and Anvka Foundation, nearly one in every five Indians suffers from Vitamin D deficiency.
The problem is worst in eastern India, where around 39% of people are affected.
Research also shows that urban residents are more likely to suffer than those in rural areas, mainly because they spend long hours indoors in homes and offices and get less sunlight.

Too Much Vitamin D Can Be Harmful

Doctors warn that excess Vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia, a condition that may lead to:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Weakness
  • Frequent urination
  • Kidney stones

Common Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency

Some of the usual signs include:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Bone and back pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Frequent infections
  • Mood changes
  • Slow wound healing
