Toxic Air Crisis in Delhi-NCR: AQI Crosses 300, Causing Eye Irritation and Itching — Know How to Protect Yourself

National Desk: The air pollution level in Delhi-NCR continues to worsen, reaching alarming levels. The air quality in the national capital has deteriorated so much that its effects are now extending beyond the lungs — people are increasingly experiencing eye irritation, itching, and redness. In most areas, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 300 in recent days, which falls under the “very poor” category.

What’s the Air Quality Situation in Delhi?

On Friday morning, the AQI in Delhi’s Akshardham area was recorded at 322, while Anand Vihar crossed 329. Areas such as Kartavya Path and ITO also reported worrying figures. Even though Lodhi Road recorded a relatively lower AQI of 229, residents there complained of difficulty in breathing and eye discomfort. Due to the pollution, the entire NCR region is blanketed in smog, significantly reducing visibility.

Why Are Eyes Getting Affected?

According to Dr. Raahil Choudhary, Director of Eye7 Eye Hospital, harmful particles like PM2.5, dust, smoke, and nitrogen dioxide in the air can trigger allergic reactions in the eyes. These pollutants cause itchiness, burning sensations, and dryness. The fine particles also disturb the natural tear film that protects the eyes, leading to dryness and discomfort.

Can Air Pollution Affect Eyesight?

Experts suggest that while pollutants do not directly damage vision, prolonged allergic or inflammatory reactions can lead to infections and complications if not treated on time, potentially affecting eyesight in the long run.

Common Eye Problems Caused by Pollution

  • Persistent itching and burning sensation
  • Redness and swelling
  • Gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes
  • Blurred vision and fatigue
  • Excessive tearing
  • Dryness upon waking up

How to Protect Your Eyes from Pollution

Doctors recommend taking extra precautions during high-pollution days:

  • Wear sunglasses or protective glasses when stepping outdoors to shield your eyes from dust and pollutants.
  • Rinse your eyes with cool water after returning home to relieve irritation and itching.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to maintain moisture in your body and eyes.
  • Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands, as it can cause infections.
  • Refrain from using eye makeup or kajal during heavy pollution, as it may worsen irritation.
  • Consult an eye specialist immediately if redness, swelling, or burning persists.

The increasing pollution in Delhi-NCR is not just a threat to respiratory health but also poses serious risks to eye health — making protective measures and timely medical care more important than ever.
