New Delhi: Panic gripped passengers at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after a Swiss International Air Lines (Swiss Air) flight experienced an engine fire shortly before takeoff, leaving six passengers injured and triggering an emergency response.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred when the aircraft was preparing for departure. Smoke and flames were noticed in one of the engines, prompting the crew to immediately abort the takeoff procedure and activate emergency protocols. Airport fire services and emergency teams rushed to the spot within minutes and managed to bring the situation under control.
Passengers onboard described moments of chaos and fear as cabin crew instructed everyone to evacuate the aircraft using emergency exits. Some passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, mainly due to panic and the rush to exit. All injured individuals were provided immediate medical assistance and later shifted to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Authorities confirmed that none of the injuries are life-threatening.
Officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport stated that safety remains the top priority and that the aircraft has been grounded for a thorough technical inspection. The exact cause of the engine fire is yet to be determined.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken note of the incident and is expected to launch a detailed investigation. Meanwhile, airport operations were briefly affected but have since returned to normal.
This incident has once again raised concerns over aviation safety, although prompt action by the crew and emergency services helped prevent a potentially major disaster.
