New Delhi: After the formation of the BJP government in Delhi, a series of decisions have been taken in favor of traders. Following the removal of police involvement in issuing hotel and restaurant licenses, and simplifying the process for factory licenses, the government is now preparing to provide relief to traders whose properties were sealed in 2018 under the orders of the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee.
Under this move, sealed properties are expected to be de-sealed soon. A joint decision on the matter is likely to be taken by the Municipal Corporation, the Delhi Government, and the Central Government. Properties booked due to unauthorized construction may also get relief. This step will not only benefit traders but also help residents facing issues such as the absence of electricity and water connections due to sealed or booked properties.
Background of Property Sealing in Delhi
In 2017–18, thousands of shops and properties across Delhi were sealed following the Monitoring Committee’s directives. The reasons included misuse of properties, non-payment of conversion and parking charges, and unauthorized construction. While some shops in markets like Amar Colony and Mehar Chand Market were de-sealed after paying penalties, over 5,000 shops still remain sealed.
Government Deliberations
Sources suggest that several rounds of discussions have already taken place between the Central Government and the Delhi Government. However, the authorities want a solution that does not violate the Supreme Court’s or the Monitoring Committee’s orders.
There are also talks of introducing an amnesty scheme for properties booked due to unauthorized construction. This would allow residents to access basic facilities such as housing benefits, electricity, and water meters.
High-Level Meeting
Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also discussed the matter with Delhi MPs. However, a final decision on the mechanism of providing relief is still pending.
