Delhi Pollution and AQI: Air Turns Toxic Again as Cold Weather and Calm Winds Push AQI Beyond 400

New Delhi: The air quality in Delhi and Noida has deteriorated sharply once again, with large parts of the National Capital Region shrouded in a thick blanket of smog. Soon after the lifting of GRAP-4 restrictions, pollution levels rebounded aggressively. Due to sluggish wind speeds, pollutants have accumulated in the atmosphere, pushing the Air Quality Index (AQI) beyond the 400 mark in several areas of Delhi.

Severe Pollution Hotspots in Delhi

According to data released at 7 am by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality in many parts of the capital remains in the Severe category:

  • Vivek Vihar: 424 (worst affected)
  • Jahangirpuri: 417
  • Narela: 413
  • Anand Vihar: 410
  • Rohini: 409
  • Bawana: 404

These readings clearly indicate that Delhi’s air has once again become unsafe for breathing. Experts say the primary reason behind the sharp rise in pollution is the near-stagnant wind conditions, which prevent the dispersal of pollutants.

Cold Wave and Fog Add to the Crisis

Along with pollution, Delhi-NCR continues to reel under intense cold and cold-wave conditions. Safdarjung recorded the lowest temperature in the city at 7.7 degrees Celsius. Dense fog during early morning and evening hours has also reduced visibility on roads, impacting traffic movement.

Weather Forecast and Jet Stream Impact

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a western jet stream is flowing over northeast India at an altitude of around 12.6 km, with wind speeds reaching 125 nautical miles. A western disturbance is currently active, while another is likely to affect the region around December 30.

Outlook for the coming days:

  • Cloud cover and fog: Cloudy skies are expected on December 27, 31, and January 1, with a dense fog alert issued for the next two days.
  • Temperature trend: Minimum temperatures may drop by another 1–2 degrees Celsius over the next two days, followed by a slight rise thereafter.

Health Advisory

In view of worsening pollution and falling temperatures, doctors have urged residents to take precautions:

  • Wear N95 masks when stepping outdoors.
  • People with heart and respiratory conditions should avoid morning walks.
  • Use layered warm clothing to protect against the cold.
