The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India (ICMAI) recently hosted a two-day symposium, featuring a seminal seminar on the pivotal role of media in nation-building. The distinguished gathering was graced by the presence of Shri Navneet Sehgal, Chairman of Prasar Bharati and former IAS officer, who delivered the keynote address.
Ishwar Singh Bhati, Editor Output Zee News Regional underscored the escalating significance of media’s role in contemporary society. He emphasized that, notwithstanding the burgeoning influence of social media, mainstream media remains the gold standard for credible news, thereby amplifying its responsibility to uphold journalistic integrity.
In the contemporary era, the role of mainstream media cannot be overstated, particularly as it serves as the fourth pillar of democracy. The media has a profound responsibility to discharge its duties with utmost impartiality and integrity.
The burgeoning influence of regional news channels and newspapers has prompted individuals to rely on regional publications and channels for credible news. Consequently, smaller news stories that were previously overlooked by national media outlets now occupy a prominent place in regional media.
The significance of this role is further underscored by organizations such as the Press Council of India, which play a vital role in maintaining journalistic standards and ensuring media freedom .As a cornerstone of democracy, the media has a multifaceted role to play, encompassing information dissemination, accountability, fostering public debate, providing diverse perspectives, civic education, avoiding bias, protecting against online trolling, and promoting independent journalism.
