National Desk: There is big news for liquor consumers in the national capital. Soon, Delhi may see an end to liquor shortages and the frequent problem of not finding preferred brands at retail outlets. The Delhi government is working on a new Excise Policy, aimed at making liquor sales transparent, consumer-friendly, and fully digital.
What Is the Government Planning?
The government has constituted a special committee to prepare the draft of the new policy. The committee’s mandate is to make liquor availability in the capital data-driven and customer-centric. Sources indicate that technology will be used extensively to address flaws in the existing system and improve overall efficiency.
‘Pre-Booking’ and Mobile App Facility
One of the key features of the proposed policy could be a dedicated mobile application. Through this app, customers will be able to:
- Check the stock of their favourite brands at nearby liquor stores
- Pre-book popular brands in advance to avoid disappointment on reaching the shop
- Access mapped liquor outlets and view real-time stock availability near their location
This digital system is expected to significantly ease the buying experience for consumers.
Government to Monitor Demand in Real Time
The proposed policy also includes data tracking mechanisms. If consumers search for a particular brand on the app and it is unavailable, the information will be directly reported to the government. This will help authorities assess brand-wise demand in the market and direct shops to maintain adequate stock accordingly.
Draft Likely by January 2026
According to sources, the draft of the new Excise Policy may be released by January 2026. The government plans to seek public feedback and suggestions before finalising the policy. A dedicated grievance redressal section will also be included to address consumer complaints effectively.
