This year’s Kanwar Yatra during the holy month of Shravan witnessed a unique and inspiring initiative. A group of young devotees from Ambala undertook a 150-kilometre foot journey to Haridwar, carrying a ‘Badi Kanwar’ — a large, elaborately decorated structure used to transport Ganga water. But their mission extended beyond spiritual devotion.
Unlike many Kanwariyas whose focus is solely on performing religious rituals, this group aimed to spread awareness about the true essence of Dharma — promoting peace, combating superstition, and bringing moral and spiritual education to communities along their route. Their Kanwar became a moving platform for religious awakening.
On Thursday, the group, representing the Sarsehedi Shiv Mandir Committee of Ambala Cantt, was seen passing through the Nagla Imarti road near Roorkee after collecting sacred Ganga water from Haridwar. Locals welcomed them with flower showers and heartfelt devotion.
Anuj Saini, the committee’s president, shared that they have been actively participating in the Kanwar Yatra for the past 10 years, using the journey as a medium for spiritual outreach.
“So far, we’ve reached over three lakh people with the true message of Dharma,” he said.
The team included young members such as Sahil, Rahul Saini, Navneet, Bhola, Kamal Saini, and Manpreet alias Lakkha. They emphasized that Dharma is not limited to religious rituals like worship and prayer.
“Dharma is a way of life — it includes service, self-discipline, and truth,” said one of the group members.
Wherever the group halted during their journey, they conducted interactive religious dialogues, question-answer sessions, and engaged with children on moral education. They also encouraged young people to develop a rational and progressive mindset, free from blind faith.
The “Badi Kanwar,” due to its size and vibrancy, drew considerable public attention, becoming a symbol of spiritual revival and a mobile stage for religious discourse. This effort highlighted how the Kanwar Yatra can evolve into a meaningful movement — not only for personal devotion but for community upliftment and cultural awareness.
