Ghaziabad: Following the Supreme Court’s directives, the Municipal Corporation has begun drafting a plan to free city residents from the menace of stray dogs. After several rounds of deliberations, officials have identified land in Arthala and Mewla Agri villages, owned by the corporation, where a shelter home for stray dogs could be established. One of these locations will be finalized, and the shelter will have space to accommodate around 200–250 dogs.
Municipal Commissioner Vikramaditya Singh Malik stated that work on the shelter home plan has already begun in compliance with the Supreme Court order. Land has been identified in Arthala and Mewla Agri, and the proposal will be placed before the municipal house in the upcoming meeting.
Once approved, construction of the shelter will start at the selected location. At present, there are more than 50,000 stray dogs within the limits of the Municipal Corporation, out of which over 30,000 have already been sterilized.
Currently, two Animal Birth Control (ABC) centers are operational — one at Nandgram and the other near the new bus stand. Each center carries out sterilization of about 55–60 dogs daily. In the past week alone, 327 dogs have been sterilized at these two centers. With the launch of a third ABC center at Siddharth Vihar, the city will be able to sterilize 100–125 stray dogs per day.
