At the World Government Summit in Dubai, Google CEO Sundar Pichai made a big announcement regarding quantum computing. He said that in the next 5 to 10 years, we will start the practical and useful use of quantum computers. Quantum computing is mostly for research work only now. Pichai likened this to artificial intelligence (AI) saying that 10 years ago AI could do very little but today its use has become much different.
Commercial Use to Start Shortly
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a similar but slightly different prediction earlier this year. He said that quantum computers would one day become extremely useful, but it would take decades for that to occur. In response to Huang’s assertions, Google Quantum AI founder and leader Hartmut Neven indicated that quantum computing would become much more “practical” than Huang imagined. According to Neven, Google aims to begin commercial uses of quantum computing in the next five years.
1000 Times More Powerful Than Ordinary Computers
Neven also explained, “We expect that in five years we will have real-world applications that are only possible on quantum computers.” Quantum computing is a technology that has mainly been talked about by experts and scientists for many years. It has been repeatedly claimed that quantum computers would be 1000 times more powerful than ordinary computers and would do calculations at mind-boggling speeds.
Pichai also made a comparison with AI, stating, “If we look back, quantum computing today is at a stage similar to where artificial intelligence was a few years ago. Before the release of ChatGPT in 2022, AI was well understood by scientists and was largely utilized for commercial use. In the same way, most individuals today view quantum computing as a quicker computer, but its real potential is actually known only to scientists, researchers, and the tech pioneers developing it.”
