IndiGo Flights Crisis: Big Relief for Passengers! SpiceJet Steps In, Announces 22 Additional Flights

National Desk: Amid the nationwide crisis caused by the mass cancellation of IndiGo flights and the severe inconvenience faced by passengers, the central government has taken a strict stand. Meanwhile, other airlines — SpiceJet and Air India — have made major announcements to provide relief. After more than 2,000 IndiGo flights were cancelled in the last five days, Sunday (7 December) finally showed signs of improvement.

SpiceJet Operates 22 Additional Flights

Responding to the high passenger demand, SpiceJet has announced 22 extra flights. These special flights will operate from Delhi, Mumbai, Patna, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Adampur airports. Passengers stranded due to IndiGo cancellations can now book on SpiceJet for immediate travel relief.

Air India Caps Ticket Prices

Following directions from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Air India and Air India Express have stopped the arbitrary surge in ticket prices.

Fare Caps for Non-stop Domestic Economy Flights:

  • Up to 500 km: Maximum fare ₹7,500
  • Up to 1,000 km: Maximum fare ₹12,000
  • Longer distances: Maximum fare ₹18,000

Airlines cannot charge above these limits, ensuring fair pricing during the crisis.

Free Cancellations & Full Refunds

Air India has rolled out major relief measures for tickets issued from 4 December, valid for flights scheduled until 15 December:

  • Full Refund: Passengers can cancel their bookings by 8 December and receive a 100% refund.
  • No Fees: No cancellation or change fee will be charged.
  • Easy Process: Changes or cancellations can be made via the 24×7 call centre, travel agents, WhatsApp chatbot, mobile app, or the airline’s website.

DGCA Issues Show-Cause Notice to IndiGo CEO

Taking a serious view of the situation, DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has issued a show-cause notice to the IndiGo CEO.

  • 24-hour Deadline: The CEO must provide a detailed explanation within 24 hours.
  • Strict Warning: The notice states that failure to respond may lead to stringent action against the airline.

Two Key Directives from the Central Government

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has accused IndiGo of not properly adhering to FDTL (Flight Duty Time Limitations) rules and has issued two major directives:

  1. Passenger Relief: IndiGo must issue refunds promptly and locate all missing baggage, ensuring delivery to passengers’ homes.
  2. Operational Review: The government will now conduct a review every 15 days of IndiGo’s operations, staffing, and recruitment. Any deficiencies found will result in strict action.
