Bengaluru: What began as a moment of celebration quickly turned into a tragic incident during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory parade. The team, having clinched their first-ever Indian Premier League title, was being honored by thousands of jubilant fans gathered at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and its surrounding areas in Bengaluru. However, the joyous atmosphere was soon overshadowed by chaos, leading to a deadly stampede.
According to media reports, the stampede claimed the lives of at least seven people, including one woman and several men. Eyewitnesses describe the scene as “utterly chaotic,” with crowds surging from all directions, overwhelming the security arrangements. The event, intended as a celebration of RCB’s long-awaited IPL triumph, quickly descended into panic and confusion.
How the Incident Unfolded
The incident occurred late evening as thousands of fans, many without tickets or proper access passes, tried to force their way closer to the team buses and the stadium entrances. The area around the Chinnaswamy Stadium was packed beyond capacity. Despite efforts from local authorities to control the crowd, the sheer volume of fans created a dangerous situation.
Witnesses stated that as fans pushed forward, barricades collapsed, and people began falling over each other. Some tried to escape the crush, while others were caught in the stampede. In response to the escalating situation, police reportedly resorted to lathi charge (baton charge) in an attempt to disperse the crowd, which only intensified the panic.
Casualties and Injuries
Authorities confirmed that seven people lost their lives, while dozens more were injured, many of them seriously. Several of the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where emergency services were already on high alert due to the size of the event. Local hospitals reported receiving patients with multiple fractures, head injuries, and signs of internal trauma.
The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Among them is believed to be a young female fan who had traveled from Mysuru to witness the historic celebration.
Police and Government Response
In the aftermath of the incident, Bengaluru Police Commissioner R. S. Patil addressed the media, expressing deep regret and promising a thorough investigation. “We were prepared for a large turnout, but the crowd far exceeded expectations. We will examine what went wrong and take strict action if negligence is found,” he said.
The Karnataka state government has announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences and has called for a high-level meeting to review the security and crowd control measures at public events.
Public Reaction and Moving Forward
While the RCB victory was a long-awaited moment for fans, this tragedy has cast a dark shadow over the celebration. Social media has erupted with condolences and calls for accountability. Several users pointed out the lack of crowd control measures and questioned the decision to allow such a massive gathering without proper infrastructure.
The RCB management has also released a statement mourning the loss of lives and has assured full cooperation with the authorities during the investigation.
As the city mourns, the need for stricter crowd management protocols and better planning for large-scale public events has once again come under scrutiny.
