Rekha Gupta Takes Oath as Delhi’s Female BJP Chief Minister

BJP’s senior leader Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi today at Ramlila Maidan. The star-studded ceremony witnessed top BJP leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Besides Gupta, Delhi cabinet ministers Kapil Mishra, Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, and others were administered the oath, formalizing the new state government. Significantly, Rekha Gupta is the sole woman BJP leader who is currently serving as Chief Minister.

Suspense over Delhi’s cabinet ministers came to an end on Thursday when the Ministry of Home Affairs made an official announcement. The six new cabinet ministers are Parvesh Verma (New Delhi), Manjinder Singh Sirsa (Rajouri Garden), Ravindra Kumar Indraj (Bawana), Kapil Mishra (Karawal Nagar), Ashish Sood (Janakpuri), and Pankaj Kumar Singh (Vikaspuri).

Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, is the only woman CM of a BJP-ruled state or Union Territory and the fourth female CM of Delhi. She started her political career in 2002 when she joined the BJP after almost a decade with the ABVP. She has been the general secretary of Delhi BJP’s Mahila Morcha and national vice-chairperson of the BJP Mahila Morcha. An experienced councilor, Gupta fought and won the Delhi assembly elections from Shalimar Bagh, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes. Her promotion indicates the BJP’s faith in her leadership and grassroot connect.
