This Eid weekend is going to be a blockbuster for Indian film, with two big releases in store. First off is L2: Empuraan, the most costly Malayalam film ever made, featuring Mohanlal. Not long after that, Salman Khan’s Sikandar will reach the cinema screens, after his eagerly awaited return since Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan in 2023.
At a recent L2: Empuraan promotional event, director Prithviraj Sukumaran spoke about the possible conflict between the two movies. He explained that there is no competition and wished Sikandar all the best. “Salman Khan is one of the biggest stars in the nation, and I hope Sikandar becomes a blockbuster,” Prithviraj said. He even urged people to watch both films back-to-back.
Released on March 27, L2: Empuraan will have a jump-start before Sikandar’s release on March 30. Meanwhile, pre-bookings for Sikandar, starring Salman Khan and Rashmika Mandanna, have been spectacular. In a matter of hours, more than 40,000 tickets were booked, with the Hindi 2D version alone making ₹1.13 crore. With block bookings included, the movie has already raked in ₹5 crore, with 7,952 shows lined up across the country.
As per trade monitor Sacnilk, Delhi has taken the lead in ticket sales with 21.84 lakh, followed by Maharashtra (20.39 lakh) and Rajasthan (13.33 lakh). At the other end of the spectrum is Himachal Pradesh with bookings of just 1,150 tickets. Owing to sluggish initial bookings in some markets, distributors are hopeful that Sikandar would rake in approximately ₹50 crore in its first weekend.
