Delhi Capitals have formally appointed Axar Patel as their captain for IPL 2025, putting an end to speculation about the captaincy position. Axar, who is 31 years old, has been a part of the franchise for six years and was retained for Rs 16.5 crore. Although his experience as IPL captain is limited, he has captained Gujarat in domestic cricket and was India’s T20I vice-captain earlier this year.
With all teams confirming their captains, here’s how the IPL 2025 skippers shape up:
Chennai Super Kings – Ruturaj Gaikwad
Gaikwad succeeded MS Dhoni in IPL 2024 and guided CSK to fifth place with seven victories from 14 games.
Delhi Capitals – Axar Patel
Axar succeeds Rishabh Pant, who bowed out prior to the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Delhi had finished last season at sixth position under Pant.
Gujarat Titans – Shubman Gill
Gill retained his captaincy despite a dismal IPL 2024, when GT finished eighth with five victories out of 14 matches.
Kolkata Knight Riders – Ajinkya Rahane
Rahane will captain the defending champions, while Venkatesh Iyer will serve as vice-captain.
Lucknow Super Giants – Rishabh Pant
Pant was acquired for a record price of Rs 27 crore and will take over from KL Rahul under whom LSG finished seventh in IPL 2024.
Mumbai Indians – Hardik Pandya
Pandya retains MI captaincy following a last-place finish in IPL 2024.
Punjab Kings – Shreyas Iyer
Iyer was bought for Rs 26.75 crore following Punjab’s ninth-place finish last season.
Rajasthan Royals – Sanju Samson
Samson retains the captaincy following a third-place finish by RR in IPL 2024.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Rajat Patidar
Patidar takes over from Faf du Plessis following RCB’s fourth-place finish last season.
Sunrisers Hyderabad – Pat Cummins
Cummins took SRH to the IPL 2024 final and remains the captain.
