India’s First Integrated Rapid Rail and Metro Station Set to Open in Meerut

The Begumpul station, which is a part of the large-scale RRTS and Meerut Metro project, is almost ready and will be a major underground transport hub. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) aims to operationalise the station by June. Importantly, this is India’s first composite project in which two transit systems — Meerut Metro and Rapid Rail Transit Corridor (RRTS) — will have common tracks. The station will have two platforms and four railway lines to accommodate both systems.

NCRTC Chief Public Relations Officer Puneet Vats confirmed that track laying in both directions is finished, with the station nearing completion. Upon completion, Begumpul will be the sole underground station in Meerut serving both Namo Bharat (RRTS) and Metro commuters.

Spreading across 6,000 square metres and positioned 22 metres below ground, the station is a technologically advanced complex constructed over four floors. It lays emphasis on customer convenience, complete with 20 escalators out of which 13 have been installed. The technical infrastructure in the form of flooring, air-conditioning, and platform screen doors are also being installed, along with installing CCTV cameras to monitor in real-time.

Trial runs for Meerut Metro commenced in January on the Meerut South to Meerut Central section. The metro should reduce traffic congestion on the congested Delhi-Meerut highway, enhancing connectivity to Modinagar, Ghaziabad, and Uttarakhand.

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS, India’s first rapid rail corridor, is a common venture of the central government and four states. With a price tag of Rs 30,270 crore, it will reduce Delhi-Meerut journey time to 50 minutes.
