Noida Violence: 5-Day Strike, 45,000 Workers, Intelligence Failure — Govt Hikes Wages After Chaos

National Desk: The violent unrest that erupted in Noida on Monday, April 13, has exposed serious lapses in administrative preparedness. What began as simmering worker dissatisfaction over five days suddenly exploded into large-scale violence, leaving over 80 factories vandalized and several vehicles torched. Following the unrest, the Uttar Pradesh Government announced a significant hike in minimum wages late at night.

Intelligence Failure: Police Caught Unprepared

Questions are being raised about why authorities failed to anticipate the scale of the unrest despite clear warning signs since April 9, when workers had already begun protesting on the streets.

  • Ignored Warning Signs: Traffic diversions had to be implemented on April 10, indicating rising tensions. Despite this, no additional force was deployed.
  • Lessons Not Learned: A similar incident had recently occurred in Manesar, Gurugram, yet the Noida administration did not shift to high alert.
  • Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) Failure: The LIU failed to assess that nearly 45,000 workers could mobilize simultaneously.

Three Hours of Chaos

On Monday morning, areas including Phase-2, Sector 59, 62, and 63 in Noida turned into conflict zones. Stone-pelting incidents were reported in more than 80 companies, and multiple vehicles were set on fire. In several places, a small number of police personnel appeared overwhelmed by the crowd.

After nearly three hours of unrest, the situation was brought under control under the leadership of Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh.

Government’s Damage Control: Wage Hike Announced

In response to the violent protests, the state government took swift action by increasing minimum wages by up to ₹3,000 across different worker categories. The revised wages will be effective from April 1, 2026. Officials described this as immediate relief, adding that a permanent solution will be worked out through the wage board.

Action Taken So Far

Authorities have confirmed that the situation is now under control. Strict action is being taken against those involved in the violence. Multiple FIRs have been registered across police stations, several suspects have been detained, and efforts are underway to identify others using CCTV footage.
